Book Review: The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver

This was another find while trolling the teen shelves at the library. OMG, it was totally great.

Apparently this is a hot book to teach in high school literature classes, and I don’t totally get that. Yes, there’s the theme of escape (teen dream!) and eventually finding a new home, even if it’s unconventional. And yes it discusses immigration and the plights of undocumented immigrants and Native Americans in a somewhat modern era.

The Bean Trees is hella 70’s/80’s and I think kind of symbolic in a number of spots. The writing is addictive and the storyline is just fine. The stage was set for really awful things to happen, and I’m thankful that didn’t happen!

I just reserved the sequel. I’m pretty into this pre-Animal Vegetable Miracle Kingsolver.
